NBA Rumors: Derrick Rose Waived by Grizzlies; Veteran PG Wanted Out of Contract

 Veteran point guard and former NBA MVP Derrick Rose is reportedly looking for a new home.

The Memphis Grizzlies will waive Rose, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania. Ian Begley of SNY added that the Grizzlies released Rose from his contract:

The 35-year-old has one year remaining on the two-year deal he signed with Memphis last season, which is projected to run through 2024-25. he will earn $3.4 million per season.

Rose was hampered by knee and hamstring injuries that limited him to just 24 games in his first year with the Grizzlies. He has never played more than five consecutive games in a full season, but he said in April that he planned to return to the NBA for a 17th season and believed he would do so in Memphis.

"Yes, I'll be back," Rose said at the time. “I talked to [general manager] Zach [Kleiman], I talked to the coaches… This summer my focus is on rehab, training and staying disciplined.


In limited action last season, Rose averaged 16.6 minutes per game. 8.0 points, 1.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. In addition to Rose's absence, the Grizzlies have also been plagued by injuries to key players such as Ja Morant, Marcus Smart and Desmond Bain. Memphis is 13th in the Western Conference with a record of 27-55.

If Rose chooses to pursue an NBA career, he can still be a reliable floor general when healthy. Teams looking for a veteran would benefit from adding him to their locker room, and he will likely face a challenger to help him chase the rings that have eluded him throughout his career.
